Culture and Geography
An archipelago in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands consist of 18 islands covering approximately 540 square miles in the heart of the Gulf Stream. Usually it is divided into six regions, these regions are:
- South Streymoy
- Northern Streymoy
- Eysturoy
- Norðoyggjar
- Roam and Mykines
- Sandoy and Skúvoy
- Suðuroy
Home to some 49,000 inhabitants, the islands are an autonomous region of Denmark since 1948. A culture of acceptance, the inhabitants of these islands are considered fairly acceptance of other cultures. In addition, many residents of the Faroe Islands are able to speak several languages, including Danish Foroese ,, other Scandinavian languages and English as well.
Time
While the weather is often unpredictable due to its location on the Gulf Stream, which is also the place that keeps fairly temperate climate, with moderate temperatures throughout the year and only occasional, brief snow fall during the coldest month Winter.
What to do
The Faroe Islands offer a variety of possibilities, ranging from fresh cuisine restaurants in Nordic cultural centers, including the capital Torshavn, bird watching along the coast and fishing and a host of other leisure activities on land. Of all the activities offered to visitors from the Faroe Islands, one of the most popular is the observation of birds, and for good reason. A remote location, the Faroe Islands see the arrival of millions of migratory birds each year to breed, including its most famous resident, the puffin. Friendly and curious bird, bird watchers to the Faroe Islands are often able to get close enough to get amazing photos.
All birds aside, there's much more to enjoy here too, like hiking, historic and archaeological sites of importance and many unique and fun as knitting annual festival, which every April is celebrated events.
Get the Faroe Islands
Travel has become even easier this year with Atlantic Airways, the national airline of the Faroe Islands. A recent announcement was made by Atlantic Airways has now launched a new fortnightly service from Edinburgh to the islands. In an effort to open these beautiful islands visitors and those traveling on business, the new flights will operate Monday night and Friday morning and will join other direct flights from Denmark, England, Iceland and Norway and Bergen.
